Cockroach                

Not all Cockroaches are pests but as a general rule in this breed the Cockroach are very good at surviving and breeding. The majority of Cockroaches that are pests are African Cockroaches even if sometimes they name suggests otherwise. A Cockroach has four to five pads on their feet but mainly use the first two pads on their feet unless climbing. Contrary to common beliefs, the pest Cockroach does not like to walk but may walk on overly dirty surfaces. Their main form of defence is escape; hence, they are constantly grooming their antenna and feet. This holds one of the keys to their control. But like all pests there are things you can do for free that help control these pests are:

• Clean-up after food handling should be immediate, thorough and regularly carried out.

• Dishes and utensils should be not left unwashed overnight.

• Pet’s food bowls should not be left unwashed for periods.

• Water availability should be reduced where possible, (eg. leaking taps, containers with water in them etc).

• Foods should be stored in tight Cockroach proof containers.

• Garbage should be stored in tightly closed containers.

• Where feasible, cracks and crevices that may harbor Cockroaches be sealed.

• Equipment in food-handing areas should be kept clean

• Reasonably regular clean-up of “longer term” build-up of waste foods (eg. grease accumulation around stoves and vents or spilt food material at back of shelves etc).

Usually, a thorough survey of the building will reveal the extent to which practices and procedures need to be modified. Where very poor sanitation and hygiene practices exist, chemical treatments will be limited in their effectiveness.
